The Maud Gonne Society’s first major undertaking is a campaign to erect a statue of Maud Gonne in Dublin city, ideally on O’Connell Street, where she would join the very small number of real, historically significant women currently commemorated in statue form in public spaces across the city.
In 2025, a successful Kickstarter campaign laid a solid foundation—building a global community, funding our society's initial launch, and giving us the tools and the people to fight for public representation. Our ultimate goal is to erect a permanent, public monument of Maud Gonne in the heart of Dublin.
Dublin’s streets are still heavily dominated by bronze monuments of men, leaving the extraordinary women who built this nation largely invisible to passers by.
We intend to change that landscape forever with our push to secure formal civic and council approval for a physical monument of Maud Gonne. A statue of Maud Gonne "marching" in Dublin stands in direct solidarity with modern activists, inspiring new generations—especially young women and girls—to understand the deep roots of the fight for justice and human rights in Ireland and beyond.
We've have a structure and clear process to follow that requires approval from local planning and heritage bodies, engagement with community stakeholders, permits from Dublin City Council and relevant authorities.
Here in London, the Public Statues and Sculpture Association is recording statues of women across the United Kingdom and urging the public to help them augment the list. There is no equivalent in Dublin but the dearth of monumental women on the streets is being recognised there, as elsewhere.
As Maud Gonne is an obvious oversight, we are confident of success.
